I've heard several different reactions to the story. Some people think it was foolish to fight back. Others hail Dan as a hero. But deep down either way, anyone who knows Dan personally is just glad that he's ok.

I don't think that. What I said was, "that's not something I would show to anyone or try myself." That may be a hair-splitting distinction, I know.
That's fair. And there is a difference between what you said and using the word "foolish."
But some other people (mainly anonymous commentators on the news source websites) have voiced opinions on the subject that have been... a bit more explicitly disparaging.
